DirectAdmin & CustomBuild Update Routine for a DirectAdmin VPS

Written by

documenting DirectAdmin VPS and self‑managed hosting systems.

This checklist applies DirectAdmin and CustomBuild updates in a controlled manner. These updates should be performed before web server, PHP, or operating system package updates.

When to run this checklist

  • As part of routine maintenance
  • When DirectAdmin indicates updates are available
  • Before applying OS‑level package updates

Pre‑update checks

  1. Confirm stable access
    • Verify SSH access is available
    • Confirm the DirectAdmin control panel loads normally
  2. Confirm no conflicting operations
    • No backups currently running
    • No package managers active
    • No long‑running administrative tasks in progress

Apply DirectAdmin updates

  1. Log in to the DirectAdmin control panel as admin.
  2. Navigate to Server Manager → Admin Settings.
  3. Review any DirectAdmin update notifications.
  4. Apply available DirectAdmin updates as prompted.
  5. Wait for the update process to complete before continuing.

Apply CustomBuild updates

  1. From the DirectAdmin control panel, navigate to Server Manager → CustomBuild.
  2. Select the Updates tab.
  3. Review available updates.
  4. Click Update All to apply CustomBuild updates.
  5. Remain on the page while updates are running.

Do not interrupt the process. A blue progress message may appear and will clear automatically when updates finish.

Confirm update completion

  1. Open the Messages section in DirectAdmin.
  2. Confirm messages indicating CustomBuild updates have completed.
  3. Ignore transient service restart messages unless they persist.

Operational notes

  • DirectAdmin and CustomBuild updates are applied before other update layers.
  • Do not reboot during active update processing.
  • Some environments may benefit from a reboot after updates, but this is conditional.

Next step — choose one option:
– Proceed to After Server Update Verification Checklist.
– If a reboot appears necessary, proceed to Reboot Decision & Verification Checklist.
– Or continue with the next update layer.
