Operating System Package Update Routine for a DirectAdmin VPS

Written by
Jeffrey Thomas Baygents
documenting DirectAdmin VPS and self‑managed hosting systems.

This checklist applies operating system package updates on a DirectAdmin VPS. OS updates are performed after DirectAdmin and CustomBuild updates have completed successfully.

When to run this checklist

  • As part of routine maintenance
  • After completing DirectAdmin and CustomBuild updates
  • When security or stability updates are available at the OS level

Pre‑update checks

  1. Confirm prerequisite updates are complete
    • DirectAdmin updates have finished
    • CustomBuild updates have completed without errors
  2. Confirm stable access
    • Verify SSH access is available
    • Confirm the DirectAdmin control panel loads normally
  3. Confirm no conflicting operations
    • No backups currently running
    • No package managers active
    • No long‑running administrative tasks in progress

Apply operating system package updates

  1. Log in to the DirectAdmin control panel as admin.
  2. Navigate to Server Manager → System Packages.
  3. Review the list of available package updates.
  4. Click Update All Packages.
  5. Confirm the update action when prompted.
  6. Remain on the page while updates are running.

Do not close the session or initiate a reboot while updates are in progress.

Monitor update progress

  1. Wait for the package update process to complete fully.
  2. Watch for any error messages or stalled processes.
  3. If progress messages remain visible, continue waiting until they clear.

Operational notes

  • OS updates are applied after DirectAdmin and CustomBuild updates.
  • Package updates may take several minutes depending on scope.
  • Some updates may recommend or require a reboot, but this is conditional.

Next step — choose one option:
– Proceed to After Server Update Verification Checklist.
– If a reboot is indicated, proceed to Reboot Decision & Verification Checklist.
– Or pause here if no further maintenance actions are planned.
